Advice For Parents

Supporting Your Child’s Student Accommodation Choices

My Student Digs supports your child in finding the perfect student accommodation for their needs. But what can you do to support your child’s search?

Student Digs Supports Your Child in Finding the Perfect Student Accommodation for Their Needs

Many students will be moving out of the family home for the first time, which we understand can be a daunting time. As parents or guardians, supporting your child in choosing accommodation for their time at university is an important undertaking.

We have supplied all the information below to help parents of children moving to Leicester understand both the requirements and options available to them, in order to support their child’s search for accommodation.

Does My Child Need a Guarantor?

Our landlords, along with the majority of student landlords, ask for a guarantor in the letting of the property to ensure an individual is committed to the payment of rent and keeping to their other obligations under the tenancy agreement.

A parent or legal guardian is the most frequent choice for our student residents, but the guarantor must be deemed suitable by the landlord.

As a guarantor, we would advise sitting down with your child and discussing their responsibilities of rent payment and the behaviour expected for them to act responsibly whilst living in the property.

Deposits

All Student Digs properties require a deposit to be paid. This deposit is to cover any unpaid rent and damages caused by misuse to the property. The deposit amount will be stated on our website and set out in the tenancy agreement.

Before each resident moves in, Student Digs complete an inventory of the property on behalf of the landlord. This is to ensure we can evaluate any damages to the property, should they occur.

At the end of the tenancy, and as long as no damages have occurred, your deposit is returned to you within 10 days.

Safe Accommodation Advice & Assurance

At Student Digs, all our accommodation is selected and designed with safety in mind, to help our students and young people feel comfortable during their time at University.

All our properties are regularly maintained and are compliant with regulations for Gas Safety and Electrical testing to ensure we meet the highest standards for our residents. We regularly inspect all electrical circuits in the property and PAT test the appliances for safe usage, as well as exterior maintenance and fire safety checks.

Tips for Safeguarding Whilst Living in the Property

To increase the safeguarding of your belongings and for your child’s personal safety, we have shared some tips to enable them to remain vigilant. Many thefts are opportunistic and happen surprisingly quickly, so it is important to remain alert for the protection of their belongings.

  • Keep All Valuables Out of Sight
  • Keep Windows and Doors Locked, Even If You Are Away from the Room for a Short Period of Time
  • Check IDs of Maintenance Workmen/Agents/Council Employees Before Entering the Property
  • Never Be Alone with Someone You Don’t Know in the Property
  • Avoid Leaving Valuables in the Property Over Extended Holidays or Breaks

Contents Insurance

We Advise All of Our Students Living in Our Accommodation to Obtain Insurance for Their Possessions. Please Check Your Own Contents Insurance Policies to See If Your Child Is Covered and, If This Is Not the Case, Make Sure to Arrange Insurance Cover with Your Child Before They Move into the Property.
